Please help- new clutch needed

Hey folks- i'm new to the forum, and.. well.. don't really know much at all about the insides of this wonderful car i have. I do know that my clutch went out and I can't shift gears anymore. I had the car towed to the dealership on Saturday, and waited till this morning to get a qoute. I was shocked when they quoted $2200!!!! I don't know much, but i think i'm getting ripped off. Anyone on here have a clutch replaced before? If so, how much was the damage? Are there any other options?
info- i'm in St. Louis, MO - car's at about 61K miles

dealer in HI also quoted me $2,200 for clutch parts/labor. Local BMW/Porsche shop quoted $800 labor plus parts.

yeah, those dealerships are rough.. i called around and found another shop that would let me purchase the parts online.. Drivewire.com and ship them over. They're charging me $650 labor- that includes resurfacing the flywheel. I spent $220 on the clutch, and hopefully i'll be ok, the mechanic is a friend of my boss, and pretty trustworthy (he used to work on my boss's lamborghini's and porches) so- if anyone in the Stl area needs work after warranty, pm me and i'll give you the info.

My clutch is going out and the dealer has quoted $2800. I checked with a guy I trust and he said that is pretty much inline with what it should be. Luckily, I this guy works in a shop that also works on MINI's and he can shave 500 off the price. But it looks like you are still in the same ballpark. Mine is 2002 S. I am the original owner but am very seriously considering trading it in!

Yes I thought about that but I took my car in to get an oil change at a Grease Monkey and an hour later, it was done. They could not figure out how to do it. With that in mind, I want an experienced MINI mechanic only! Good luck with yours.
