Disadvantages of 15% Pulley?

I'm trying to decide whether or not to install at 15% pulley for "Stella's" 1 year bday present. I've read plenty of threads on the benefits of a pulley with a few questions about who has experienced problems, but haven't been able to find anything on the reasons why someone wouldn't install one and was hoping some of you could help clear up some of my (and likely others) confusion on the issue.

The only disadvantages I could find are:
- possible void of warranty for issues relating to use of pulley
- harder wear on belt
- anything else?

For example, what about long haul drives? Are there any issues driving at high speeds for long periods of time?

Thanks!
Miles

Negatives that haven't already been mentioned:
Right foot might be pushed more.
Lower gas mileage.

can't go back to stock, unless you cook your factory pulley in high temp
and slide it back on.

Some dealer may try and void warranty with a 15% pulley but, most are OK with it. I'd ask my dealer if they are 15% friendly

Other than that, DO IT

You all are forgetting to mention that it does nothing for a regular MC. I put one in mine, but noticed no difference. I think it's all hype.

Gas Mileage

I just had a 15% Helix pulley and CAI installed at the Dragon.

I drove down to the Dragon from Wisconsin and got 30.1mpg.

On the drive back I get 30.5mpg.

712 mile trip. 11.5 hours of driving time.

Very little if any difference. I've had mine on for about 80,000+ miles now, and the I couldn't put a number on the gas milage difference. I can still get 30-34mpg if I drive mellow (highway milage) or if I put my foot in it alot I can get in the mid 20's. Basically same as stock.

*Isabella*, who is not very mechanically inclined, said this:
"When I knew you were getting mods put on I just expected it to be something that I wouldn't notice that much, but would just trust that something had happened that was good. But when we took the first trip out... wow... the sound... and the power... it was amazing! I never thought it would be that much!"
The power is VERY noticeable, especially right off the line. You lose a lot of that initial hesitation that the stock has, and there is a huge difference up top when you hit the gas. Reaction AND acceleration increases are very noticeable.

Not true anymore ALTA makes and sells a 0% pulley (i.e. Stock Size for those that want to go back)

Sounds like with the 15% pullely, the only mpg decrease would be due entirely to operator enthusiasm?

But what about the CAI? Would there still be the noticeable boost and acceptable mpg without it?

I have had the pulley on the car now for about 3 weeks and have noticed a jump in gas mileage from around 20.5 to about 21.7 or so. Seems weird, but I can only think that with the colder plugs and better power band that the car is running more efficiently and thus getting better mileage...cause I know I am driving it harder now too!!

If wanting to go back to stock size (0%) Alta and MINI Mania both sell a stock size pulley. Its not a stock pulley. Its simply a stock size pulley that will give you stock boost.

Ignorant MC owner so I'm not up with the strange ways of the SC but what happens to your stock pulley when you do the mod and why can't you put it back on the car at will?

The stock pully isn't bolted on, it's held on by pressure. To get it off you need to use a tool to yoink it off the shaft, which yoinks it off straight as not to bend the shaft. As to what happens with it... it's makes a pretty good paper weight.

To put it back on you need to heat it up (>350 degreesF I've heard, thus expanding the metal), and forcing it on. A PIMA if you ask me.

Most aftermarket pully companies have come up with a hub that sits on the shaft and allows you switch out pullys with bolts.
