Timing Chain Tensioner problem....PLEASE HELP!
Timing Chain Tensioner problem....PLEASE HELP!
Hey everyone,
I have an '02 MCS and experienced the sparkplug stripping issue...so I tore everything apart, helicoiled, put all back together. Upon re-assembly and startup, I'm having this issue...
Slapping sounds coming from timing chain area inside motor...here are the symptoms:
1) not DIRECTLY related to engine speed. Sound occurs more frequently w/ rpm increase...but not at same frequency as the spinning components are moving
2) no leaks
3) no timing issues
4) oil pressure ok
At this point I've narrowed it down to timing chain assembly...most likely tensioner. In the Bentley Manual, it instructs to compress the tensioner, then install. I did not do this...I installed while under tension (total pain in the a**).
Presently I am taking everyting back apart and am planning to simply re-install everything, but this time I will compress the tensioner first, then release tension on the chain after installed in car.
Here are my main questions:
1) Does anyone have experience with the re-assembly of the timing chain and surrounding componentry? Are there any obvious pitfalls I should be aware of?
2) I have the tensioner compressed now. The Bentley says to apply pressure to the tensioner w/ a pry bar and it will self-release, and tension the chain. Is this really all there is to it or is it more involved than this? With the tensioner off the car, I cannot seem to get it to release from its compressed position. I do not want to get it back into the car then not be able to release its tension.
I'm planning to continue my re-assembly tonight and stay up as late as it takes....any advice before then is appreciated!

Okay, at this point I've gotten everything back in to the point of using a pry bar or some such device to apply pressure on the tensioner. The Bentley says not to put pressure on the chain itself...but this means the only place you could apply pressure is the plastic rim of the chain guide....not the sturdiest place you can pry against!
Please, if anyone has put their motor back together and has gone through this step...your advice is greatly appreciated.
Can I use the chain to apply pressure to the timing chain tensioner?
