Service Engine Soon Light Activated

Two days ago, while drive uphill on the freeway, the Service Engine light activated on our MCSa convertible. In addition, the ASC light illuminated. When I start the car now, only the Service Engine light remains on. This happened about 6 months ago and a software upgrade fixed the issue.

Any thoughts on what might be wrong this time. I see the MINI dealer tomorrow - so I'll post the official diagnosis.

Thanks!

Deff. have the code pulled so you can see what the issue may be.

Mine did this after I had the software "upgrade". It was throwing a p0171 code, right bank lean, or something like that. Only occured on slight inclines. Removed the VGS i had on for over 30, and the code has yet to come back. Most likely a vacuum leak (at least mine). Have you done any mods reciently?

Dealer has informed me that Cylinder #1 has misfired - same issue as 6 months ago. Possible culprit is the coil or spark plug. They've swapped the coil and plug with another cylinder and will attempt to replicate the misfire. Car should be ready tomorrow - I hope!

I'll post the official results...

my friends has this problem with his car. He has a 19% pulley and when he hits high boost it will kill the asc and the ses light comes on. if he turns the car on and off three times it resets the ses light and the asc light goes away after the first time.

I think he said it has something to do witht he ecu seeing to much manifold pressure.

Pretty strange for such a rare/random misfire. If it is defective coil or plug you'd see it alot more frequently, than a single misfire. Probably electrical, but I don't know about coil or spark plug. Please keep us posted.

I tried looking up the bulletin but tis doesn't seem to want to cooperate tonight :(

Disposition from Dealer

Dealer informed me they couldn't duplicate the issue with cylinder #1. They released the car and suggested that if it happens again, bring it back for another go-around.

SES and ASC/DSC Follow-Up

Has anyone checked the Technical Service Bulletins on this? I am having a similar problem.

Check your O2 sensor. Mine had to be taken off and cleaned at 40,000 due bad gas after the hurricane. Sometimes the O2 sensors can go bad early.

This is a different issue (and a different code) I have seen before that is an overboost the pressure exceeds the MAP sensors range and you get some lights.

I can't seem to find it myself but you can check alldata.com they have a list of TSB the update every so often (seems like a monthly thing) go to BMW all of the MINI TSBs begin with M.

Just cleaned or did it need to be replace my light comes and goes on its own now I figured I'd just wait until next service but if I could clean it on my own that would save me from having to look at it so often. I find this puzzling as well because the only thing I can really even come close to connecting it to is I started seeing this about a month after I started using toptiergas on a regular basis, guess I'm just better off with the cheaper SAMs club that never caused any issues.

I never new of a cleaner for the O2 sensor. All input singles try to keep a 14/1 fuel ratio. The main job of the up stream O2 is to flag the ECM that this is not happing.A O2 sen. code may not mean the sen. is durty or what I call lazy. Most of the time it's right on.Take a good look at the spark plugs to see what kind of burn their is.

My light came on for a little while, then would go off mysteriously. Then the next day this would repeat. This means that the O2 sensor is still good, otherwise the light would just stay on. I removed the O2 sensor closest to the catalytic converter and just wiped it down with a rag. Trust me, you'll see a big difference. Mine was pretty carboned over. Once I wiped it down and reinstalled it, I used my code reader/reset tool to erase the fault. If you don't have access to one of these, just unplug your battery's negative cable for 10-15 minutes. This will reset the computer. I did this to mine around September of last year, and the light hasn't come on since. This is assuming that your O2 sensor needs to be cleaned. It won't hurt you to try this, as it's one of the easiest things to do.

How did you get it out I put the car on jacks last night, and couldn't seem to get a wrench on there and still have the room to move it.

Are the Cooper S and regular Cooper's headers different? Mine is a base model Cooper. It might be that the S model's is a little bit harder to get to. I'm not real sure. Here's another thing to try. They have ratcheting wrenches I've seen at Harbor Freight stores. I'm sure Sears might have them too. Those things are nice and might just help you out.

my light has come one 2 times after extended drives on the highway. extended being 6+ hours on my way to Chicago from Charlotte. Dealer said it was a leak and they changed injectors and seals. they drove it for 20 miles and no light. had to run back up to Chicago and surprise, it came on again. it's only come on when i stop for gas and yes, i have tightened the cap enough. i am scheduled to bring in the car tomorrow. hopefully it can get fixed because i hate any warning lights on in my car, as I am sure everyone does! i will post my results tomorrow. for the record, the dealer, hendrick mini, has been great and are doing all they can.

Every 3000 miles my SES light comes on. The code it threw was for 2 sensors, and the visit to the dealer prior to this last one, they were only able to change one sensor (not the o2, and I fogot which one they said it was) because they were out of stock on the other. This last trip they changed the other one, so now I am just waiting to see if it comes on in another 3000 miles. So we will see. They did say it was running lean, if that helps.

I have been getting a random SES light on my 2005 MCS JCW w/10K miles. Dealer says it has to do with the o2 sensors and MINI has a software upgrade coming out in May to deal with it. They said I would be notified.

My SES light came on just last night. After shutting down and restarting the engine, it was still lit. Checked the gas cap, secured tightly. Took it to Auto Zone today and had them run a check on it. The code was for evaporative emissions....seems the green plastic portion of the gas cap was slightly loose on one side. So the guy reset the light, and now all is well. 70 degrees, windows down...life is good.

I had the same problem. I took it in for service and the O2 sensor was going bad so they changed it. Problem solved.

I get the p1498 error code...the dealer said it was "unfiltered air" and "updated" the DME...well it didn't work. I got an OBDII reader and plan on showing them the error that I've stored in the reader.

I dont like it when dealers give the car back not fixed. They should believe you when you tell them what the problem is. Well, the realilistic (sp?) problems.
