Questions after replacing Power Steering Pump

like many other 02 owners I recently had to replace the PS pump because of the usual issues. The old one was leaking oil from the top ( will post some pics later) this is some real cheap build stuff not what you would expect from a BMW build car. So here are my questions:

Does anyone know if the new pump is better build or will I have to replace
that one too in some years?

The whining noise of the PS has decreased significatly, anyone noticed this too?

The steering has become tighter, is this normal?

You said it was out for about a year and a half. Did you still drive it like this? Just wondering.

Oh, and UnMINI, did you replace the pump yourself? If you did, how hard was it. I know the procedures, but I was wondering the difficulty level. Thanks guys.

hey, my 03 PS started whining a couple days ago.

i was wondering if anyone tried to flush the system before replaicing to unit?

also, how long can i get away driving on it like that before it does any serious damage?

thanx for the help.

I didn´t replace the pump myself but the mechanic who did it (non dealer) told he had to remove several parts before he got to the pump so I think it could get a little complicated.

Rival: my pump had that sound for almost two years until it went kaput. I even thought it was normal.

a mechanic friend suggested getting a complete flush before replacing the unit. he stated that electic ps units tent to clog up. he went into a long rant as to why but, im not going to type that out now..ha.
im goin to give that a shot while im gettin a system flush for the summer months.

ill post my results. of course.

I also have a 02 MCS and recently (of course, just out of warranty) had to replace the pump. The noise is now very reduced.

I have an '02 MCS that is also just out of warranty (51K miles) and need to have the pump replaced. The dealer wants $1600. Does that sound right? I found a pump for cheap froma junk yard and would like to do it myself, but can't find "how to" instructions. Anyone have any advice?
PS-UnMini- I have heard lots of people say that after their pump was replaced it was much quieter.
