SES light won't go away
If it is coming on and going off by itself, then there are codes being thrown and more than likely a problem with one of the systems. You need to have it checked out rather than just buying a code reader to clear the codes. However, if you wanted to scan it to get the code and then go in armed with that, that is not a bad idea.
Mine has been on for 10 months ever since I went with a larger valve head and cam. The car has been to 2 different shops and Dinan for over a week twice and the SES light has not gone away.
Dinan 1st told me it was a minor vacuum leak coming from a charcoal canister pump behind the rear passenger wheel next o the exhaust. After changing it, the problem hasn't gone away. I can't smog the car and my car is 2 months out of registration. I really need help in how to resolve this.
