need help with a boost gauge

Reading around on boost gauge installs, I've found the answers to most of my questions, but could someone post a clear picture pointing out where to tap in to the vaccum line to hook it up? I'm guessing I'll need to remove the intercooler for that correct?

so, if I don't have the VGS mod, I just tap into the longer red line in drawing two? And that's the intake manifold with the intercooler off right?

looks like you should be able to just tee in off the red line.

Yes, just plug it with the fuel pressure regulator hose. (long red one on the drawing).

Just unplug it from under the intercooler, and get som extra hose from your local auto store. Your boost gauge should come with the "T" fitting.

It's an easy job to do with the intercooler removed. Just take your time to get the hose through the firewall. There's a "hole" near the steering column, but you'll probably need to make a hole in it, with a small screwdriver.

awesome, thanks for the help. I'm going to mount the gauge to the left of the tach with a 2 1/16 mounting cup, so do I need to break out the hacksaw and trim these threads down? It doesn't fit all the way into the cup as is now:

and with that clear tubing, how does it seal into the the sealing adapter? Does it just hold itself in there? I'm not sure if I just need to feed the tube into the adapter and let it hold itself in there. I'm not too clear on the directions.

and which grommet do i use for the back of the gauge? the smaller one that came with the gauge or the bigger one that came with the mounting cup? DarkMiniCooperS, I'm using your setup on your webpage as my inspiration So any other pointers/help you can give would be much appreciated.

Also, did you need a bigger screw on the back of the tach to get the gauge to attach there? I haven't looked at it so I'm not sure how long the threading is.

there is a ball you slip over the end of the tube, then you clamp it down with the supplied nut.

its a pressure fitting and i believe it flares the end out to make a tight seal.

and when going from the nylon tube to the rubber adapter, yes, the hose will just hold iself in there. it wont slip out any time soon.

ok one more, i missed a question.

yes, you need to hack down the threaded rod, since you will not be mounting it with them. i just took about an inch off with a pair of wire cutters, the metal isnt too hard to cut.

okay, there's a piece that flares in the middle i believe...autometer calls it the "ferrule" I think? Is this what you're mentioning?

I thought about mounting it right there, I just have too many anxieties about drilling into the a pillar.

Thanks for all the replies, very very helpful.

I'll try just snipping the thread with wire cutters.

I may just wind some electrical tape around the end of the tube that attaches at the "tee" fitting, just to be safe.

One question - what did you do with your wiring? did you wrap it with wire loom or something? (where it comes out of the back of the gauge?

Err...one more... - where did both of you run your wiring for the lights? I've got a few feet of extra wire I can use, as I'm assuming I'll need it...If anyone could post some directions on that and/or pictures of where to tap into wires.

oh yeah, is it necessary to buy more tubing for the tee adapter, or can I just cut the existing tubing?

and...I don't need that black bracket piece in the left of the picture correct? It came with the gauge.

i used a grey/red wire from under the dash next to the fusebox. grey/red wires ae all for interior gauge lighting.

you will not need the other mouting bracket, thats for mounting in a hole.

you will probably need more rubber hose to go from the t fitting to the other lines but i wouldnt try and add more nylon tube. i ran rubber tube from my firewall to the adapter.

I'm not sure I understand that last part. I'm going to the parts store in a little while, I need to know what all I need to buy. what size rubber hose? how much of it? do you mean you bought more hose to go from the tee to the firewall? or from the firewall to the adapter on the back of the gauge?

Boost gauge install

The T and the vacuum hose you will need is 5/32.

Read this, you won't have any questions afterwards

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ht=boost+gauge

While your in there do the VGS Mod, it's nice

Aren't you going to intefere with the side air bag? Wouldn't it be in a better line of sight next to the tach?

Btw you don't have to take the pipe off the side as seen in the pic. With a pair of long bent needle nose pliers (with some black tape wrapped around the teeth as not to rip the tube) and a flashlight, you can easily install the tube from the outside.

I'll look again tomorrow. Finding a longer screw was enough of a pain in the ***, so I don't feel like finishing it all right now. Baby steps. Plus I have to be off to work shortly.

Any words of advice to try to make this go smoother tomorrow? I feel like a preschooler...so incompetent.
