The 05/06 MC's have a Getrag transmission and the Reverse gear is square cut w/ no syncro. What this means is, you have to come to a full and complete stop, shift into 1, then into R. Otherwise you will grind gears, and look like you are a total newb at driving a car (Plus it makes you feel bad for hurting your car). Although, I still dont understand the reasoning for R being unsyncro while the other gears are...

Yep, just shift into 1st, stop completely, then shift into R. Or, if you started the car cold, shift into 1st, then shift into R.

With practice you'll be able to feel when the gear stick is completely engaged into R. usually it feels like a double detent, slight resistance, then a slight clack into R, you're in. If it feels really smooth and kinda fuzzy when you shift into R, you're probably not in gear yet and you'll grind.

One does not have to fully enage a forward gear to stop the clutch and prevent clashing when going into reverse, simply 'touching' any of the forward gears is usually enough to stop the clutch and make a smooth shift into reverse.

I am so used to needing to do this with other vehicles that I had/drove with a non-synchro reverse that upon getting my MCS, I was automatically doing it. It was only a bit later that I realized the the MCS trans had a syncro reverse!

I did not know that! Thanks for the heads up.

This has been a delima for me many times when I am trying to go into reverse. Ive found that I cant just THROW it into reverse, I have to wait a second (or two) in neutral before engagement or grinding will occur.

Another thing that is annoying is that everynow and then the car wont engage reverse. I have to sit there for about a minute popping the car in and out of R and 1 trying to get it to engage.

Final whine and complaint is that although only 3 times in the cars life time, the car has ground going into 4th....just a regular shift. Sometimes the 05 getrag can make me abit nervous..

If the tranny won't go into reverse, the 2 easiest ways to fix this are:

1) While applying pressure to the shifter going into reverse, slowly engage the clutch (let up on the clutch) and you will feel the shifter click right into gear. what's happening here is that the teeth on the slider or coupler are hitting end-to-end with the matching engagment teeth on the reverse gear (like this: >< )

2) Move the shifter back into neutral and let out on the clutch pedal for just a second and then push the pedal back in. The shifter should now go into reverse with ease. By letting out on the clutch while the car is idling, you just made all of the gears in the tranny spin for just a second, so you shouldn't have any of this >< after doing so.

Most transmissions in most cars do not have a synchrnized reverse, so sometimes placing the shifter quickly into any forward gear before going into reverse will stop all of the gears inside the tranny from spinning, as long as you are at a complete stop.

All of the gears are constantly spinning and meshing with one another in the tranny when the clutch is engaged (pedal out) and/ or the drive wheels are turning (even coasting with the tranny in neutral and the car can be turned off.)

Shifting into 1st gear before reverse has solved that reverse gear grinding problem for me. I should have searched for this solution six months ago.

Thanks for your postings.

Never had this happen but I'm always at a full stop when I shift into reverse. Most of the time I am shifting into reverse from first as I can't seem to get into any parking spots while in fourth or fifth gear. I find reverse much easier to engage than it was in my '97 Integra.
