How do you change the oil?

Is there a link or sticky for the procedure? What tools, where'd you buy the filter (BMW or aftermarket)? The car has less than 7000 miles but I don't want to wait for the free oil change. What else should I do while I'm in there? Thanks.

After reading all the talk about oil filters (good brands, bad, brands, plastic inserts, etc etc etc) I just went to the Dealer and picked-up a few from them. They may cost a few more bucks, but big deal.

Also if you don’t already have the 36mm socket, you can order one here

36mm

or I have even seen these at Pep Boys by their oil filter accessory display (not in the tool section).

By the time you add in shipping, the cost from a dealer is probably the same anyway.

Exactly, for the simple fact that they are so cheap for what they do, just get the dealer ones!

Check with your dealer, mine (Cincy MINI) offers a good discount on oil filters if you purchase three or more at once.

I buy filters at a time when I am buying other stuff for the car. Last time I had Classic toss in 6 filters with my order of other goodies. I like having them on hand.

I bought a few filters from Classic, too. With their low prices and the NAM discount, I think they still ended up being cheaper (after shipping) than buying them from Herb Chambers in Boston. I'd buy them from Classic even if it ended up being more expensive; Herb Chambers isn't getting another dime out of me.

Does anyone know if you can pick up the filters at a BMW dealership?? I have one MUCH closer than the closest Mini dealership.

Thanks!!!

Here's another link: http://www.tech-esq.com/MINI/MINIOilChange.htm

I printed this out 3 years ago when I first got my car, still have it on a clipboard in the garage...

Get the shallow 36mm socket though - I use the std craftsman socket, and it's really too tall/deep...
