freakin' Mini service center!
I went to Mini of mountain view to ask a very specific question.
"What do you need to do after changing a throttle body?"
The reason I was asking is I just went for a larger TB, got the MTH for it, and have initial tip in issues (but I don't know if it's me yet, usually is....). I've also read in my ramblings that there are some values that are set by a factory tool that don't get reset with the normal tricks.... (I'd guess these things would be like voltages out of position sensors where there are motion stops and the like).
I asked one guy, and he said he'd done on his own car (replaced the TB, but with a stock unit). He said he just put it on and drove away. He did admit that wasn't his area of expertise, and got me the technition who actually does the work..... This was interesting. Here's what he says:
The Function 21 reset only resets the optional computer, not the engine adaptive values. These aren't reset by a battery disconnect either, requires a factory tool.
This is called, if I remeber correctly, a DME Adaptive Value Reset.... I think I'm gonna get dinged a half hour for labor for this.....
He did not specifically know if the TB limit positions were part of this reset or not.......
So, I'm a bit frustrated that the Mini service guys couldn't even answer the questions...
Oh yeah, the service manager never responded to the page, even to say he was busy... And that's after he didn't return my call. My experience there is 50/50... sometimes it's great, sometime it sucks!
So, for all you guys and gals who know more than me (now, I'll get millions of posts...)
What does the function 21 actually reset?
What does a bat disconnect actually reset?
Are there other automotive parameters that require a different method to reset or initialize?
If yes, what are they?
What specifically is needed to reset an ECU for a new TB (And I know the bently manual says it needs a DM1 or whatever to reset it, but it doesn't say that the fuction 21 or batt disconnect won't).....
Thanks to all the can help...
Matt

There is an adaptive reset for throttle body settings in the DME. You'd need the factory scan tool to do it. I haven't seen a difference in logs done before and after the reset though and I've unplugged my throttle body in the past. If your car isn't happy with your larger throttle body, I don't know of anything you could do with a scan tool to correct the situation.

Thanks Andy...
I didn't think the adaptive value reset would fix the flat spot, but I was hoping it would fix the throttle tip in. I think that some throttle bodies may have different voltage outputs at "closed"...... But I don't know for sure if it will make any difference, as I've already sent my core in... Grrrrr
Also, if this is due to the BP valve being in an indetermanant position, have you found which of the BP valve fixes do the best with regard to this (other than the dreaded wire tie!)
Thanks,
Matt

The Dinan stuff (in general) is very well done, and very expensive. I keep tinkering on my car, so their ECU tunes may not be the best bet for me.
We'll see where it all leads...
