Maybe for the monthly photography contest we should have one titled: MINIs and Roadkill.

This is a real coincidence!

I came home after a week or so out of the country a couple of days ago, and my wife told me that when driving another of our cars, a 2004 Mercedes, this godawful stench was ever present.
I checked all over the car, including under the hood and in the trunk, (a forgotten doggie bag or a dead animal?), but to no avail. There was no smell until the car was running with the AC on, then it was unbearable, like a rotting fish!
I then called my local MB Dealer and told them the problem.
"Ah-Ha" was the response, "We have a bulletin about this. Bring the car in, and we'll fix it".
Apparently, with the recent spate of hot and humid weather, mildew forms in the evaporator and heater box. They have a fogging device that fills the car up with - yes - fog! (of the harmless variety), then they proceed to run the car for an extended period with the AC in the recycle mode. The whole process took about 3 hours, but the result was a 100% disappearance of the odour.
The fog has inhibitors in it to restrict the further growth of mildew, after removing what was there.
I was told in extreme cases it was necessary to change the heater box.
Could this also be a MINI affliction? Surely HVAC systems in cars are of a somewhat common design.

I've always heard that when the MINI ac filter goes bad it smells more like rancid gym-socks than mutilated and decaying animal bits. Both are completely gag-iducing, though, so you may be right.

In any case, I like the zombie animal stories better....it's just so much more tragic.

Now, doesn't that sound much nicer?
One question did anyone spill MILK or CHOCO MILK. I had the spill from hell on my Mazda Mx3 ... and the let me tell you I had to call the HazMAT team.

On the origional question here.... My 02 cooper use to have a horrid smell in it when I would turn on the A/C for the first 10 min or so.( Yes,, the smell of death )... Apperently condensation was ( or had ) pooling somewhere in the system and would stagnate...( kinda unusual in AZ since nothing here is moist) It did only seem to happen when the humidity was higher... Anyway... what I ended up doing was turning the A/C on fresh air and spraying lysol in the cowl vents by the windshield..it sucked the lysol through the system... and wala.... no more smell....

That is a great picture I wish I would have thought of taking a picture of that poor old rat. Being 16 then, I am not sure why I didnt think of it. I would have loved to share it with you all.

I actually heard a similar story on Car Talk on NPR and it too was the a pool of water related to the the A/C. Wish I remembered more.

my parents have a 80 something jeep and they have spilled a few cups of coffee in that peace and i tell you that thing reaks and will always reak!!!

i went on a fishing trip in on the oregon coast, we set crab traps on the way out, fished, then came back and picked up the crabs. i packed all the fish and crab up in my 93 4RUNNER the crab some how managed to leak out and i got crab juice all over the carpet in the back. for 3 months, hot summer months that car smelt so freakin bad, and all the carpet cleaner and everything i tried did nothing and the heat made it smell so much worse. the smell did finally go away though...

sence we are on the topic of dead animals cars and stinky things here are some pics i have found!!! i saw some pics somewhere of a python or something that got fried ontop of a acura engine and got all tangled up in the serpentine belt, nasty!

I remember my mother coming home from the grocery store during the middle of a nice hot summer day and found that a whole gallon of milk opened up in the back of her Plymouth Horizon. That smell lasted weeks no matter what we tried. Talk about a pukey smell, blechh!

reminds me of "Grumpy Old Men" when Walter Matthau put a fish under the seat of his neighbor's car during the winter when the windows were up for days! of course you'd be forced to kill that person if you ever found out who it was!
