MCSa related issues

Anyone have any issues with their MCSa? Besides the DME/software glitch we all know of. Anyone have any other issues that are related to our tranny specifically?

Maybe this thread could start as a good place to compile any issues directly related to the tranny

I'm just wondering. Maybe from someone with more miles on their car then I. I'm @ about 4700 miles.

i'm just over 6000 miles and the only thing i hear is a very subtle and high pitched (rpm dependant) whine - almost like a dog whistle - coming from either the supercharger or the tranny itself when driving and warmed up. i know it's not the obvious supercharger whine or the air intake. it really remains quite the mystery.

anyone else hear it? you have to be in gear and driving - revving in neutral won't set it off, which is why i think it's tranny related.

as far as the tranny itself - seems pretty bulletproof to me - no problems at all - just this slightly annoying dog whistle.

i'll be upgrading to a full jcw kit when they are released, so if it is supercharger noise i expect it to vanish as the kit would replace my s/c anyway. if it's still there, then it's something in the tranny.

cheers - drew

I hear a annoying whistle like nosie when I feather the throttle when on the highway. I heard it when the car was stock and it got much worse when I added the Alta intake and my SA says its the throttle body. Are we finding a new problem thats not the TB but the tranny doing something weird?

yup - same problem here - exactly. like you it got much worse (the sound was amplified) when i added the jcw intake. so bad in fact that i had to remove the intake as it was just too annoying.

any word on a fix from your end? have you had the throttle body looked at yet? i am dying to get this fixed!

thanks - drew

i am going in for service a week from thursday to have the throttle body examined - can you give me any more info to arm myself with? if your sa said that's what it was, then why didn't they do anything about it?

thanks - drew

I attempted to do my own oil change today on a MCSa, but was unable to get at the drain plug. There is some sort of duct from the front bumper, under the oil pan, then up to the engine somewhere that blocks access to the oil drain plug. I read the guides online and heard from some other MCS owners with a manual tranny that it was pretty easy to do, but this wasn't expected. Anyone know what the duct is for? Has anyone attempted an oil change on a MCSa?

I haven't changed the oil using the drain plug (I use an oil extractor) but I did install the auxillary gauges on my MCSa where you have to remove the oil drain plug to replace it with one equipped with a temperature sensor. The duct part that you're referring to has four bolts that you have to remove and the whole part will then pop off. After this the drain plug is easily accessible.

Good luck!

I figured out how to remove the duct with the help of someone from the local MINI club. We were wondering though if that was on all '05s or just automatics? It's a duct for the power steering fan. We also had to remove the exhaust header heat shield to make room for the filter housing to fit down there. Then we replaced the air filter and discovered that when the dealer had replaced the throttle for the limp mode recall they hadn't attached the air box properly. The tabs in the back of the air box were not hooked. They also had installed the intake snorkel wrong and broke 1 of the tabs off of that. Wonderful service! When I have to bring it in for this wiring harness campaign they are going to have to replace the snorkel now. It seems almost everyone I know has had something broken when they bring it in to be fixed!

The power steering fan tube seems to be special and unique to the MCSa. When I had Randy install my Pulley in July I was the only car that had the duct work and he said it was unique to the Auto.

Would someone mind posting a photo of the MCSa power steering fan "tube" or duct?

thanks and rock on,

I have had two problems other than flat tires. One was the service engine light that came on regularly. I got the fix for that. Today I got the fix for suddendly losing power and I sure hope that works. Mini service also fixed another tire that is losing air so I did not have to buy a second run flat. And I had my alarm system installed. So I had a lot done today and if it all holds I will be delighted. ski

does anyone else hear a sublte and high pitched squeal when the car is warmed up and running at speed? it's rpm dependant for sure - triggered by feathering the throttle - and only happens when the car is in gear.

or is it just myself and mdsbrain?

thanks - drew

Throttle Noise Update

brought the car in today and good news: for the first time the service guys took it out for a spin and heard the sound - agreeing it is something which should not be there. they didn't know what it could be - i suggested it could be the throttle body. they then asked to keep the car overnight so they could let a regional engineer have at it tomorrow (friday) and went as far as to rent me a car until it's fixed! how's that for amazing service!

they assured me they'd fix it and i am inclined to believe them ; )

when all is said and done i will post the name of the dealership who solved this annoying little mystery sound so they can get the acclaim they deserve...

more soon - cheers - drew

as of this afternoon, the mini engineer and my dealer tech dept. have decided to replace the throttle body on my car. it's being done today and i will have it back tomorrow.

i'll report in once i get to test it.

i am hopeful this will take care of the noise. i for one expect the car to free of such things after paying so much money and about to spend more on a full works kit!

fingers crossed - drew

I'm still reading too. I haven't noticed the sound in mine (perhaps I need to check closely or is it really obvious?) but I am interested nonetheless.

Best of luck!

the noise in my car is really faint, and it sounds more like a loose chain. I almost wonder if it's the sound from the pulleys. It's definitely not the whine from the SC. Anyone has any suggestions?

I can replicate it when at speed on the highway. just tap the throttle ever so slightly to lets say increase rpm by 100rpm and I hear it.

Has the Works kit been approved/released for the MCSa?
