I need help! Alta pulley/belt question

SO my wife was driving to work today and the engine shut down. I just went to look at it and the belt is shreded. Looks like it is still holding together but i sure dont want to drive it. I installed the Alta 15% pulley with a new NAPA belt about 600 miles ago. What could i have done wrong in the instalation that would cause this? Any help would be much appreciated ASAP. I may give Randy a call this morning, hopefully he can help. THanks!

Adam

Is there any help out there? I need to get this thing back on the road. Alta says i probably didnt bottom out the pulley on the shaft. Looks like i will try that tomorrow. Let me know if you have any other suggestions.

Following are the most likely candidates (not necessarily in order of probability):

1. You did not bottom-out the s/c pulley when you installed it (the Alta comment above);

2. There is a manufacturing defect on the s/c pulley; or

3. There is a manufacturing defect on the belt; or

4. There may also be some damage to the crank pulley (such as if a rock bounced into the crank pulley (rare, but it could happen); or

5. Some combination of 1., 2., 3., or 4. above.

You are definitely looking at re-doing the installation. I would remove the pulley and closely inspect it (which includes measuring it with a micrometer to see if the dimensions are the same). At the same time, inspect the crank pulley for any damage. If the crank and s/c pulley check out, then you will have to repeat the install process and be sure to confirm that the pulley is correctly seated (bottomed out). Also check that the belt tensioner is working correctly. Regarding the belt, I would be a bit hesitant to get a replacement from the same place that you got the one that is presently all shredded - especially if there is a defective belt issue.

Hope this helps.:smile:

Thanks for the help. I think i got it worked out. The pulley wasnt lined up properly on the shaft. I had to do the whole installation again which was a real pain but didnt take near as long this time. I will keep an I on it for the next few hundred miles. Thanks for the help.
