1st oil change

I know there are lots of threads on this, but having just changed the oil for the first time at 3800 mi, I figured I'd list my learnings for anyone who is interested:
- No need for a special short 36 mm socket. The ordinary 1/2 inch drive socket from Sears fits fine.

- The MINI service manual seems to show a spring over the tube that fits inside the filter. My '05 MCS didn't have one. The manual also mentions that a new metal crush washer should be placed on the drain bolt. There is no metal washer either, only a rubber washer/gasket.

- Although others have reported problems screwing the filter housing back on, I didn't have any.

- Loosening the filter housing a bit to allow the oil to run back into the pan for a few minutes works great. Put a paper towel under the housing, unscew it the rest of the way, very little oil comes out.

Changing the MINI oil is really easier than on most other cars!

I have to second these comments. Just finished my first change tonight, 2700 miles. Used Castrol 5W30, plan to go to Amsoil in the future.

I picked up a 36mm socket at Advance Auto Parts, made by Ampro. Low profile compared to the one at Sears (or so it appears from viewing on line) so that is another option. It was only $6.

I had a little trouble with getting the canister back on, more concerned about cross threading. Just kept fooiling with it until it started to go on right.

And taking it out slowly was key. Only a small amount of spillage, and I know I can improve that next time.

My only problem was finding the right and safe way to jack up the car. Wow it is low. I got it eventually but not ideal. I have ideas for next time.

Have people had luck with rhino ramps? My old metal ones are just too tall to clear the front bumper.

I really like seeing all the reinforcing and cross members. Very impressive, no I know why it drives so solid. This is first time I really started studying things.
