Broken Muffler Hanger on 2002 MCS

Anybody with an "older" MINI have this happen to them? I don't believe I've ever hit anything that could have caused this... kinds of looks like rust, but I only had the car for one year in the snow belt before moving south. I can't quite believe a 2.5 year old car already needs muffler work from "old age"??

This is the driver's side muffler... I discovered this when I had the wheels of doing a "spring cleaning" detailing...

Yes indeed! I have a photo somewhere of mine (also a 2002 MCS) that looks EXACTLY like that. That is until I took it in to have the hanger replaced under warranty. Mine gave out at about 30K. Rusted right through...and only that particular hanger. Worse part about it was that the resultant hanger piece was a virtual knife point aimed at - and swinging around - my driver's side rear tire. Once I discovered it, I therefore wrapped the whole thing up in duct tape (heat resistant) for the week it took me to get a service appointment. That was a pretty picture too.

My service dept said "Yeah, we've seen a few of those..."

Our hangers were probably scooped from the same bin of crummy parts on the same day back in Oxford. I wonder how big the bin was...
