Help me decipher where this sound is coming from:

Knocking sound when I go over a bump with the left wheel. esp. at low speeds and when turning over a bump at low speed. It almost sounds like something is loose on the left side. It's not the CV joint, I know what that sound is like. This is a heavier clunk, like the shock is loose in the shock tower. Could it be a bad shock ? I don't see any fluid leaking from the shock and I can't see anything loose under there or on the shock tower itself. What could it be ?

The car doesn't pull to either side but I hate this loud clunking. It happens especially on brick roads.

Help !

Kesh

12600mi and I am more in love with my Cooper S now than when I bought it !

Lift the car from the fender well on that side
with the bonnet up. Any noise? If the strut is
loose you may see it.

I had what sounds like a simular sound once on a Supra I owned. It turned out to be a broken bracket on the front swaybar. I'd take it to the dealer and get them to put it up on the hoist and take a look. Mine was most annoying, every bump, rattle bang bang. I cringe remembering it.
