25K Service: What to expect?

My 03 MINI (May 03 build) is due for its 25,000 mile dealer service on Monday. I called my dealer a few weeks ago to schedule the appointment, and they're giving me a loaner MINI for the entire day because "25K service can take as few as 2 hours or as many as 9, depending on what we find needs repairing/replacing."

For example, he said some MINIs at 25K need new brake pads (actually, I hope mine does, as I know 4 new pads + installation costs $$$, however, I drive "lightly" so I doubt the brakes are worn past dealer spec for replacement), some need a tranny fluid flush and fill (my MINI is a CVT), and sometimes they discover other things--all covered under warranty--that could add up to a full day in the shop.

Well, I'm glad they are thorough with the 25K inspection/service. But are there any items they are required to take care of/replace? I didn't see this listed anywhere in the manual, but I'm sure there is a dealer certified list of 25K service item "must do's." Does anyone know what they are?

What has your experience been with the 25K free service?

Thanks and rock on,

25 k service

expect to plop down some $$$ at the dealer.

they change the oil and filter, the air filter, and the hepa filter (this is the filter that needs to be changed whenver your car is in the same zip code as the dealership, and is an ungodly amount of money)

They inspect the brakes, and adjust the emerg brake as needed.

other than that they will check fluids etc, and take measurments of your brakes.

My MINI had the front brakes (rotors and pads) replaced under warranty at the 25k.

Had my 25k service yesterday, and there was no mention of the brakes, period. They fixed a seat-related airbag light, replaced my rubber clutch pedal pad, topped off my wiper fluid, changed the oil, and replaced "filter 76" and "filter element 81," one of which is presumably the oil filter.

Other than that, the only other thing on the invoice is "completed BMW inspection 1 per BMW scheduled maintenance program." I wonder if that includes a brake appraisal? I paid no $.

Since they gouged my paint while replacing the door handles, I'm taking the car back in the near future. I'll be sure to ask about the brakes, since I'm too clueless to know what I'm looking at myself...

Yeah, you shouldn't have to. Your "free" scheduled maintenance goes to 36,000 miles. The 25k should be free, but the one at 40-45k is going to cost you money.

Anyone else had this happen.

I'm up to 35000 and my mini still says it has 1500 before the second oil change. I don't think that it is right that I don't get a service at 25000 just because the car says it doesn't need one. I drive 120 miles everyday so I guess the car thinks it good to go!

I 2nd that! I just turned 25,000, and the obc says 7,100 miles till next service. It's only been serviced once @ 14,000 mi. I drive about 60 miles a day. So do I only get 2 service calls under warranty? That doesn't sound too cool.

My dealer changed the oil free of charge after one year. I was waiting for the 25,000 mile service, but after one year I still needed 4000 miles to 25K but they said to change the oil on their nickel then bring it back when the computer says at 25,000 for another oil change and service.

That all makes me feel better. I am at about 27400 and am still about 1000 miles from my 2nd service. I need to get back to the States where the oil changes are free!

My guess is that what Mini offers up free of charge in other countries is different from what they offer in Canada.

On my '02 MC I had to pay for the oil change @ 16,000kms, 40,000 kms, and then well the MC met an unfortunate fate.

They just adjusted my brakes, @ 40,000 kms they mentioned that the brakes were wearing quite well, and that at 40,000 kms I had about another 40,000 left on the brakes.

On my '04 MCS, I got the dealer to perform the first service, it was a demo and had 15,000 kms on it.

I'm a bit ticked that our friends south of the border are getting more free stuff than us canucks.

second Factory Service

Computer called for my second factory service @ ruffly 31k

They did "the check" and decided to flush my brake system??? They said it as called for. No charge for anything. (Checkered Flag gives loaners to all who buy there btw so I usually leave it overnight. They wash at pickup too)

Curious thing was back in Oct I'd hit 12 months since last oil change and they changed it for free then. Checkered Flag says change is per computer or 12 months. When I went in a couple of weeks ago they changed it again which only makes sense since I was wondering how they'd align the computer to the oil change dates.....

This appears to be one dealer that is seeking return customers

I am scheduled for my second "free" maintenance check at around 30K next week, so I'd like to revive this thread and see if anyone has something new to add. No charges on additional/needed work without asking me first, right?

Other than the routine service they shouldn't do anything without asking. My 2nd scheduled service was last month. Brakes were evaluated and measured and were good. He told me the tire wear would be evaluated and if an alignment was recommended I would be asked first as it would be my dime. Fortunately none appeared to be needed. They gave me a MCSC to use for the 3 hour duration. On the coldest day of the year.

Wow, I'm confused here. My car is in the shop today for its first oil service at 10K miles and change. Once they reset they counter, I can't imagine it being another 20k or more to the next one! BMW's counter is set to go off once 600 gallons of gas have gone through your car, I would speculate that the MINI's is the same, but geez you folks are getting some incredible mileage, or somehow the timer if fudging.

Thanks for the replies.

My odometer is at 28000+ and the miles-to-next-service counter says 3000+ more miles to go!

My one year anniversary yesterday of ownership. 19,500 with 11,400 until the next service. I get about 29 mpg and drive 80 a day of mostly highway. I thought the manual (or somewhere) said that the service was based on the amount of starts, driving habits, etc.
