K&N CAI
If your talking about the K&N Typhoon
I put one on my 04 JCW and found that it actually robbed power from the engine, after it warmed up. The reason being the heat transfer to the throttle body, the system is made of metal and transfers heat very well. Got my money back from K&N and installed an Alta CAI,
major improvement in performance. You can get one from Webbmotorsports for $255. or you might want to consider the Pilo Racing intake $145. or the Piper cross $160. or even a drop in filter for $40. But I would stay away from the K&N Typhoon, unless you just want something that looks cool and you don't care how your car runs.

If I had to do it again I would do the Hot air intake because of the cost dif.
I have seen the Typhoon for less than $200 now.
K&N CAI
When I installed my Typhoon I felt an immediate increase in power, but after 20 or 30 minuetes of driving that power seem to go away. Running on the track guys with pulley mods who I was blowing away a half hour earlier were running right on my bumper.
So I contacted Randy Webb at Webbmotorsports and in our conversation he exsplain to me why he doesn't sell the Typhoon. Randy performs dyno test on the products he sells to back up the H.P. claims and give a fair and honest evaluation of the equipment.
Randy explain to me that when he tested the Typhoon it actually show a lost of H.P. over the stock unit after the engine warmed up.
He explain the lost in power to me being due to heat transfer to the throttle body.
Randy Webb knows more about Mini Cooper performance than any 10 guys I know put together. So I took his advise and switched to the Alta CAI.
It really made a differance.

It's simple really. The Typhoon uses a metal (aluminum, if I'm not mistaken) pipe, which heats up quickly in the hot engine compartment. Since you want the coldest fresh air going into your engine as possible, stay away from intakes that use metal (heat-absorbing) pipes. Others use silicone (such as the Alta), which doesn't affect the temperature of the cold air at all.
I have an Alta, and I highly recommend it!

I have gotten out of my MINI at track days, poped the hood to let her cool down a bit, and felt the K&N intake tube just out of curiosity. It felt warm to the touch, but no where as warm as the engine. I think mine made a definate improvement over stock and after seeing the HAI numbers, I have a hard time believing it is making anything worse.
