Throttle response

Took an MCS for a test drive at Denver dealer. Very poor throttle response from idle. Blipping pedal at stop lights did not elicit increased RPM. Otherwise ran OK. Salesman said delay was "normal". Is it? Thanks Ross05

Yes. stock ECU among other things contribute to very strict emissions controls that yield basically dead throttle response from idle. Next time, try revving to over 2k rpm, and then smoothly dipping into the throttle. Sudden WOT stabs from idle will practically stall the engine. Also, keep in mind an MCS at your elevation basically has as much power as a Cooper at sea level.

I as unimpressed with the throttle response of my MCS too when I first bought it. I just got use to it...then I take my other car with a v6 and
immense throttle response!

heavy flywheel, 4 banger, ECU... just not that breath taking at low rpm's
without some upgrades. but once it's wound up, the car is very quick.

I was also unimpressed until Dinan S3 software and then 15% PULLEY. Pulley most noticable. Dinan was noticable. But pulley for sure. The new 05 is what the S should have been out of the gate!

Our BMW 330i with drive by wire had poor throttle response. Slight delay from depressing the pedal to engine increasing RPM's. My STi also has drive by wire but the response is instant.

Your STi has 300hp and much shorter gearing..one of the best j-6MT's

I've found that all BMWs with drive by wire have this problem. Often software (Dinan, Shark) can improve it quite a bit.

The air pressure at 5000 ft. elevation (a little less than Denver) is about 83% of sea level pressure. Engine power loss is similarly lower, but supercharging helps decrease this loss (when it is active at higher RPM).

Throttle response reply

To all, Thanks for the info and suggestions. As I'm not especially in a hurry to purchase I may wait 'til summer 06(and the new engine) to take the plunge. Ross05

07 Mini

As I understand it, the 07 Mini will be available summer of 06 and will have a turbo producing approximately 170HP. It will be all aluminum, made by Peugeot, and should have better mileage. Don't recall the provenance of this info. Ross05
