Rear hatch latch issues

Having an issue with my R56 rear hatch latch. Seems it will only latch if I hit the button on my key fob before closing it. If I don't it will not latch. It stays latched if I hit the fob and it opens fine with the handle. Anyone else run into this? Any advise? .
Before I discovered how to get it to latch I already replaced the latch itself and that wasn't it. Thanks

Reads like there is a hatch latch switch/sensor problem. The latch releases and the hatch is opened but the latch assumes the latched position after the hatch is opened.

'course, I offer the above without the benefit of having a wiring diagram to confirm there is a hatch switch/sensor. But I think there is because if the hatch is not closed fully there is (at least in my experience with 2018, 2020, 2023 MINIs) a warning of an open hatch on the dash. This implies there is a sensor.

I'm reluctant to mention this as I really do not like to disconnect the battery unless absolutely necessary but you might consider a careful/by the book battery disconnect and long enough for the car's electrical system to lose all residual power. Then a just as careful/by the book reconnect of the battery.

IOWs you give the car's electrical system a power reset...
