Stock Problems/IssuesDiscussions related to warranty related issues and repairs, or other problems with the OEM parts and software for MINI Clubman (R55), Cooper and Cooper S(R56), and Cabrio (R57).
ive had smoke coming out the exhaust of my mini r56 n18. I assumed it was head gasket and maybe piston rings. I've had my top end of engine out of car for a couple weeks now. Just now cracked the turbo to inspect the cartridge. I was hopefull my issues were not with the turbo since I didn't have any boost codes but here I am. Listening to scraping noises when I spin the cartridge.
My car was already in limp mode and felt like it didn't have any boost before I took it appart.
From videos, Im sure this cartridge is bad. It surprised me with very limited play even with this loud noise. I understand a good cartridge has some play in the cartridge only laterally. NOT vertical, which mine is just like other than the noise.
What do you guys think? video is attached, scrapping is LOUD.

Could this scrapping noise indicate more issues other than what I mention below? Oil pump or cooling wasn't doing its job to lubricate, especially on cold starts for the cartridge to end up like this?
I have previous discussions with my codes and symptoms before I started digging to the engine. I am currently doing piston rings, hone , head gasket, full timing chain kit, water pump, water pulley, and lapping the valves on my head and cleaning them. I will have to add a new cartridge to my parts to order.
2007-2012 Mini Cooper Turbocharger Cartridge - Air Intake - Replacement AP 07-12 Cooper Turbocharger Cartridge - 24096-02115527 - PartsGeek
Found a new turbo cartridge from parts geek for what feels like a good price, ~$120.
EDIT:I found that when I hold the side that scraps up the metal ring below the fins sits down and can be twisted smoothly. This ring is free to move 360 degrees and up and down in the gap. Is it supposed to be completed seated to the housing and not brushing the bottom of the metal on the fins. More pictures attached below.
The piece that moves up and down the gap and 360 is the metal ring looking piece with 2 taps circled in the picture.
video of it spinning 360 and completed seated with no noise while I spin turbine linked to YouTube below.
