Timing Chain tensioner: old vs new comparison
Timing Chain tensioner: old vs new comparison
Thought this would be useful to others.
red: wear mark #1
blue: wear mark #2
yellow: out vs in
2 min from home I heard a whap whap whap
bouncing off an underpass at low speed almost sounded like a mild header leak
got home opened hood. Pretty loud and def not a leak. Either timing chain tensioner or sc failure- right? Went after low hanging fruit as I was planning to head to MOT2022 on Saturday.
went to Peabody dealer and they had one in stock so I grabbed it and an oil filter.
check YouTube for instructions: 45 min job.
Fired it up and was quiet.
changed oil and checked for metal or plastic from chain rail guides.
all good. We took it up to to the event- 400miles round trip. She was a trooper!
rewind a few weeks and occasionally when the car was at temp or cold and parked it would be kind of bad sounding like a chatter.
here’s a comparison of old vs new. Dealer charged~$80

Appreciate this information! I have this to do and have a FEBI tensioner to install it is compressed. Is it a simple matter of installing compressed tensioner the start motor up to release the new tensioner? Did you use a new washer?
Cheers

I did not replace washer. The second I looked at the fastener I thought, “oh crap- that seems to be a copper or brass washer” and typically those are 1 time use in my experience.
I had little choice but to reuse the old one.
Great info thanks for fast reply. I have oil housing and oil cooler off so I have good access to change tensioner My biggest annoyance will be putting all back together only to find still leaking in same known areas.
