Anyone ever damage an N14 camshaft during removal?

Anyone ever damage an N14 camshaft during removal without the BMW special tool?
I'm going to be doing it for the first time without the tool and hoping to learn from any mishaps.
I am planning on releasing the bearing caps nice and slow, outside -> in, like this:

I'm not gonna watch a 32 minute video to see your procedure, but I will say that in all my cam removal / installation, I didn't use a special tool. Just loosen / tighten the cam caps evenly, to minimize bending the cam. Takes a bit longer, but it worked.
Appreciate the input! Whoops, the video embed there was supposed to start at 26:30. I fixed the link. He just does what you described.
