Here's the timeline on our 09 Clubman S (107k miles) problem....

death rattle
timing chain replacement (detroit tuned kit; new guides, chain, crank seal, crank and cam bolts, and tensioner) also pulled oil pan and pump screen and cleaned all of the broken bits

drove it to work (40mi) and ran OK but wanted to die at idle

coming home the engine had intermittent cutout with engine malfunction light
pulled off at an intersection and tried turning it off and back on
did not restart, had it towed home


replaced HPFP with a rebuild from Detroit tunes and did fuel filter

no change
rechecked timing just to be sure
now drinking rye

any advice? I'm thinking I might drain the fuel as it was sitting for months begore I did the timing chain but it did run for a bit

really wanted it to be the HPFP after all the complaints about them

 

A little help from my son and I got the clamp in a better place. Seems solid now.

New timing chain and guides for the death rattle. New HPFP and fuel filter for the hell of it, I guess.

Pepper should be good for a while.
