Hi Jeff. Speaking of Alta IC, my diverter has fractured as shown. The arrow is something I meant to mention also as that area was causing interference with the hood and I had to file it down. Is this fracture covered under warranty?

Thanks,
Sid

BTW, I still think you have the best air/air intercooler under my hood

Jeff; how exactly does the engine movement/static position (controlled by the engine mounts) affect the contact between the bottom surface of the IC and the stock IC posts?

The crickets are back from a small vacation on friday. Columbus day is a work holiday! Then why are we here today??

Planeguy,
Randy does know about this issue, as we first thought it was the motor mount inserts people were installing. But was how they reinstalling them back into the car.

The method of Jacking the engine up, which 99% of the people out there use works just fine. Most people remove the mounts, jack the engine up, lower the engine to where the holes line up, slide bolts in, let the engine back down, then tighten them all. The problem arises when the engine is picked up slightly and the mounts are tightened.

MSFITOY,
Give us a call, we can get you taken care of right away! The black does look nice. But all we have is the silver, hope that is ok.

JLM,
It doesn't. I didn't mean to say that if i did, but what i was trying to say was that the IC woudn't of had to be pushed into the IC so much to get it to clear if the mounts were loosened and adjusted correctly. When i kept saying mounts, i was meaning the motor mounts, not the IC mounts.

What sucks is that how do you know if you did it right?? You don't until you install our IC which sticks up more than the stocker. From the few people that have this issue and have been able to fix it, it was a pretty simple fix.

Awesome Jeff I'll give you a call tomorrow. Are you guys Pacific time?

Silver's good. It started out that way, then red, and finally black. Which is why the fracture looks like "rust" which there are none

Explanation to go with Picture of Damage

Just to be clear on the picture I posted earlier (and again in this post), the damage is caused by the two cast bosses that hold the two original front IC mounts. The damage was not from high pressure, but from vibration between the IC and the bosses over many hours of driving (actually installed the IC and made a 1500 mile trip over the next few days). There was a lot of black dust around the damaged area from the aluminum-to-aluminum rubbing. I'm sure what I did was to raise the adjusters of the back of the IC too high (trying to get the IC to line up with the inlet) and caused the contact up front on the bosses. Add lots of hours of "spirited" driving/abrasion and you get the problem. I made a fix on the damaged areas with a dab of JB Weld and two small aluminum tabs, reinstalled with some rubber washers and all is well in that respect, but IC still doesn't line up with air inlet.

Again, the damage resulted from my trying to line up the air inlet with the IC and the IC rubbing the bosses due to engine vibration, not due to the motor twisting and causing damage.

I'm betting Alta's suggestion of relaxing and re-tightening the motor mounts will do the trick. I'll try it in the next 2-3 days and post back. If that fixes the issue, I do suggest that the word gets spread as best as possible.

tonywa28,
Please let us know if that works. Also send us your address and we will send you the bumpers for under the IC.

I must be dense, but this (the part about not the enine twisting and the motor mount tweak) confuses me still:

"Again, the damage resulted from my trying to line up the air inlet with the IC and the IC rubbing the bosses due to engine vibration, not due to the motor twisting and causing damage.

I'm betting Alta's suggestion of relaxing and re-tightening the motor mounts will do the trick."

Perhaps what tonywa28 is saying is that the engine mounts are holding the
engine high in the engine bay.
This forces the IC down on the OEM IC mounting bosses (those not used by the alta) when attempting to line up the top of the IC to bottom of the air inlet (hood scoop?).
Loosening the mounts would allow the engine to drop a little which then would allow more room (for the rubber spacers from alta) between the IC and
mounting bosses when lining up the IC to the scoop. Make sense? just my .02

Old news, but still an update on the issue

Follow-up - I never did get around to relaxing the engine mounts as suggested, but I did put a thin rubber washer whereever there was contact with the IC (like on the top of the black caps/threaded posts). Took off the IC to do a detroit tuned bypass valve recently and the rubber looks a bit worse for wear, but the IC is fine.

all in all just a garden variety issue. Still love the IC.
