OEM or aftermarket cam chain tensioner?
OEM or aftermarket cam chain tensioner?
Hi folks, I am going to replace my cam chain tensioner and wondering if there is a definitive opinion on whether an aftermarket one will be ok, or is the strong preference OEM? 2009 Clubman S.
Judging by the fact that BMW has released more than half a dozen "upgrades" for the chain tensioner, I wouldn't get anything but the very latest directly from BMW (cross-checking the part number on receiving it to make sure it really is the newest version).
Now, if there is an aftermarket tensioner that one can verify that it conforms 100% to the latest OEM version, then I would consider that as well (only to buy from BMW at the end just to be on the safe side regarding built quality, too).

I would ask myself why I am doing this? If you have any, and I mean any, noise from the chain at start up you need to change the timing chain and guides (not uprate the tensioner as you are too late) these chains are only good for 60-70K miles
I have to agree, just putting in a tensioner is a band aid for noise not a real fix. If you have timing chain noise you need to do the entire kit and have it done right, a broken chain is a super expensive fix later.
You have a point about “why”. Timing set was done by the PO about 60k kms ago. I had the head off last week to replace burned valves and after reading endless articles I was wondering if replacing it was good preventive maintenance.
