Should I replace thermostat at the same time as water pump?

I have a 2009 Clubman S with 150k miles. It has a coolant leak from the water pump. Shop has recommended replacement of the thermostat at the same time and said they would knock of an HR of labour if I do them together. They say that since the car overheated, the thermostat may be siezed. I'd rather not spend the $$ to do both now, but am all for saving a little $$ of I'm going to have to do the thermostat soon anyway. Thoughts??

What's the distance between the horns of a dilemma? One says "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" and the other says "While you're in there, might as well.". Like the guy said about it possibly being effected by overheating, why take the chance of the eventuality.

The answer is yes. It's cheap insurance.

Replace the T-stat when replacing the water pump. While T-stat failure is rare it is partially because water pumps fail sooner and the T-stat is replaced along with water pump.

It is really false economy to not replace the T-stat while one is replacing the water pump.

Question 1. Why did the car overheat?
If it was because it ran out of coolant, then I would just do the water pump and refill with coolant.
If there was another reason then we need to know why before deciding on doing more stuff or spending more money. fan, thermostat, or something else???
If not sure fill it with plain water and run it too see if the rest of the system is working because likely the water pump isn't just dumping the water straight out.

2. If you do end up doing the thermostat make sure you do the water pipe as it is plastic and if it fails will require taking off the thermostat to do.

I would certainly do it on my car. On a 10 year old car, I would also do the hoses. That’s just me.
