? Changing Anti Freeze

Has anyone changed their antifreeze? Is this a difficult task, or is straight forward? Do you drain from underneath from a stopcock onm the radiator? Or is there some other MINI plug that needs to be unscrewed to drain the antifreeze? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Don't do it- if your car is still covered by the maintenance plan. Have BMW do it for you.

But if you wish....

Make sure the car is stone cold, like after not moving for at least 12 hours.

Put on hoist and lift up to gain access to lower aero shields. Remove.

Lower car.

Put a large flat basin under the front of the car. It must hold at least 4 gallons. Refer to manual on refill amount.

Open coolant tank top.

Undo lower radiator hose, and await rush of fluid. Comes out like a deluge. Its very slippery and loves to "race" across the garage floor.

Re-fit the lower rad hose and all the lower shielding.

Remove upper rad hose coonection at engine and fill into engine side and rad side with correct BMW fluid (you remembered to buy the fluid first, right?) mixed 50/50 with de-ionized, non-mineral water. Pump lower rad hose with your hand to burp the air.

Attach rad hose and fill coolant tank half way. Put top back on.

Start car and let it warm up. Put heater to full hot, but no fan. Watch fluid levels and temp gauge to make sure everyting is kosher. Put a tarp or cardboard in fron of rad to quicken heating. The car must exceed a temp of 180 degrees to open the thermostat and burp the air.

Turn off car and let car cool down after the fan has come on two or three times.

Let car sit for many hours. Add coolant to COLD mark.

Or, have the dealer do it......
