Clutch and flywheel
Clutch and flywheel
Ok hey everyone I'm in search of a new clutch and am not sure what to chose. I am deciding between clutch masters or south Bend Clutch. I currently have a stock 2007 mini cooper s. I have plans to upgrade my car after the clutch is done, my goal is 200 whp.
I know for sure that I want a single mass flywheel to handle extra power but specifically a steel one not aluminum so there is as little chatter and gear noise as possible.
Do all three brands I'm looking at have single mass steel flywheels? Which brand and stage would be best for me?
Thank
Parker

Do the other upgrades first and wait for the clutch to start slipping. By then, you should have more info on which clutch will be best for you --- and you'll probably have higher goals too, power is addictive.
I need a new clutch very soon. It slips in 3rd and above once boost hits. 200whp is just my starting goal with bolts on's and stock turbo. I know I want either a South Bend or clutch master clutch and flywheel. Southbend is a bit cheaper but have heard great things about the brand just not anything mini experience wise.
I assume you still converted to a SMF. I know I don't want a DMF because with more power and torque it won't last. I also might as well put a better clutch in it too than OEM to support whatever the future brings
If you can find the $$$, go for an OS Giken STR series clutch / flywheel package. Minimum chatter with aluminum and very reliable, even when handling 300+ WHP and 400ft-lbs torque.

Go with the clutchmaster like the FX250 as it will work for that.

Ya I thought about that buys its just so expensive. I don't want to pay that much
According to Car ID the price for southbend stage 2 clutch with flywheel is $1200 CAD.
Clutchmasters FX250 and steel flywheel is $1600 CAD
What I can't figure out is the weight of each flywheel. If one is heavier I want to go with that one to reduce any gear noise.

I'm running the factory DMF and cheapest clutch on rockauto.com. if anything I need a posi to get traction to both wheels.
Ok so update apperently the southbend comes with a dual mass flywheel. This is weird to me because with everything I have read, I understand that a dual mass flywheel is not able to handle any power increases and will break very quickly.
We offer the South Bend kits and have had very good luck with them. But they just are a clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing. You mount this kit to your existing Dual mass flywheel.

I have a SB stage 2 in my otherwise stock 2013 GTI. Pedal is a little heavier than I like but perfectly livable. It has a very nice confident feel to it. In fact it really transformed the car.

Yes you can replace the dual mass with another new one. The stock flywheel can handle the power so I wouldn't be concerned with that.

Normally they fail with age. And usually it's just a spring inside of it that breaks, they don't like fall apart. The clutch will give up before the flywheel.
