N18 Can't find a new starter!!
Hey All,
PREFACE: I am installing a new engine in my Mini R55S, the old one seized up due to poor maintenance by the previous owner. I pulled the starter off the old engine and put it on the new engine. The old starter will turn the flywheel on the new engine, very slowly, but it turns. Two different (but same) engines, two different (but same) Flywheels, one common starter.
CURRENTLY: I'm in a deep search for new or re-manufactured "Mitsubishi Electric" 11 tooth starter. I recently bought a TYC 1-19000 starter from Rock Auto and after install it didn't do the trick. The larger toothed pinion slams into the side of the flywheel and will not engage. I've been doing a bit of searching for a direct replacement for my current starter but so far none of the major auto parts stores or even the more specific online Mini parts suppliers like Outmotoring and mini Mania have this specific starter on hand. At least they do not call out if the starters they have will replace the Mitsu starter directly.
Does any one have any experience with the differences?? I'm a bit surprised that the Bosch starters will not directly replace a Mitsu. It seems wildly unlikely to me that the fly wheels are going to be vastly different between vehicles manufactured so close together.
Thank you for any help at All!!!
John
