Engine stuttering slightly when accelerating HARD

Hi all,

So my 2011 R56 is in the shop today, but I figured I'd describe the symptoms here for some feedback.

Last week I started to notice that the engine would stutter (misfire? slip?) while accelerating HARD (pedal to the metal) in 2nd and 3rd gears while going from about 3K RPM to about 5K. It's not consistent either, but I've only noticed it in that RPM range and in those gears. Sometimes I'm able to accelerate just fine without any issues. Regular driving, even at high speeds, everything seems fine. I did some searching in the forum, and it seems like the first go to thing are the spark plugs. Those were replaced a little over 2 months ago. I'm hoping maybe one is defective, but it seems fine 99.5% of the time just driving around, so it's probably not something as simple as that.

We'll see what my mechanic comes back with, but I'd love to hear if anyone else has experienced this and what was the issue.

Thanks!!

How many miles are on the car? Did you check coilpack?

It has 121K miles on it. At the risk of exposing my ignorance, what's the coilpack and how do I check it? Something else I meant to mention, no CEL. Thanks!!

Hello,

I'd suggest you replace all 4 coils if they are original. FYI - I have a 2009 MCS with 134,000 miles. I've recently completed major engine work, but replacing the ignition coils (even though there were not causing errors detected by ecu) provided a noticeable improvement in cold fast idle, warm idle, and overall engine drivability/performance.

Good luck,

W

Hey,
I wanted to follow up on this. Replacing all four ignition coils seems to have done the trick!! I've only done a little riding around since replacing them, but I did push it where I would've felt the stutter. Smooth now!! Thanks for the suggestion!!

The saga, it would seem, continues now. Driving home from work Thursday night, I was passing a truck, and I lost a ton of power, the engine light came on, and it was running rough. I wasn't far from home, so I bee lined it to my mechanic. One of the Delphi coils got fried. There was charring on the outside of it, and what looked like a hole right below that. He replaced it with a Bosch one (grey?), and all seemed better. Running some errands today, and it wasn't as bad but I got that same engine light (yellow, half filled in). When I got home, I checked it out, and the new coil wasn't down all the way. What would cause those to pop up like that? Any ideas?

Thanks!!

OEM coils are the best, even in highly modded, high horsepower engines.

Aftermarket coils are trash for these cars. IMO just replace all with oem Bosch.

it's oil fumes causing lspi. first try an oil with a higher flashing temperature (there should be a new rating for these kind of oils, i don't know the specifics). if that doesn't do the trick, try new engine cover. that'll solve it.

oil catch can is the real fix though. there are guys here doesn't believe the occ. but that'll catch those fumes that decrease your octane rating, that's why you're knocking.

- edit: oil rating i was talking about is “sn plus”.
