The engine is N14. Yes you have to change the whole thing or crack it open and check the diaphragm. The valve covers are cheaper nowadays than they used to.

that was a deleted connection on the Intake manifold - it was a passthrough for coolant to heat the intake mani (if memory is correct).. its not used on any 2nd gen..yet Mini decided not to remove the connection.. go figure.
