2006 Mini S Convertible "Limp Mode"

My wife's 2006 R52 is displaying "EP" in the gear shift indicator display. It does this periodically, showing EP for a few days then going away for a few weeks, and I really can't tell any difference in how the car drives/performs when EP is displayed and when it isn't. I have a bluetooth OBD2 adapter which I have used along with the "Torque" app on my phone to check for codes but there are none shown. I had read that this "transmission" issue could be caused instead by a bad battery, and since her battery was about 5 years old we put a new one in the car and the "EP" went away for several weeks. Now it's back, and will probably go away again in a day or two. But I'd like to figure this out.

So, how do I get to the bottom of this intermittent issue?

Thanks

I'd get the car scanned by someone with a factory scan tool BMW/MINI that will show more than your Torque app can. Last time I had that done loads of codes showed up that I had never seen. So Indy shop, dealer or purchasing the appropriate app or code scanner.

Any advice on what would be the appropriate app and code scanner??

A good scan tool that will read the BMW specific codes is the Swaben scan tool. I have one and it has paid for itself several times over now. You can register a new battery with it too. ECS Tuning has them. They are a bit pricey, but definitely worth it. I think they are around $200-250 new. You can log data with it and a bunch of other stuff that most of the phone apps cannot do. Carly is pretty nice from what I’ve seen, but I do not know much about it, except that they have changed their prices to a yearly fee of fifty bucks or something like that. And things like battery registration is an additional fee for it. That said, it can do some neat coding tricks with a quick button tap. So it does have appeal.

Ista not only reads the codes but also provides a step by step process on how to determine the cause and then provides corrective instructions.

Several of the BMW forums will have links. You will need a "switchable" dcan cable and a laptop. Might have to get a Mega download subscription for a month as the file is so big.

Sounds good, I am looking into "ISTA". Thanks.

On a more basic level, is her car really in "limp mode" since it seems to drive normally, despite the "EP" warning? Is "EP" a sort of universal warning or specific about some particular issue? I had been under the impression at one time that it indicated a transmission issue. The CEL is not lit, only the EP warning.

If I sound confused it's because I am
