02 Mini S - Automatic Trans (Stall/sudden downshifting)
02 Mini S - Automatic Trans (Stall/sudden downshifting)
Good Morning,
I am new to this forum and to Mini's. I just picked up a very clean 02 Mini S and it has a couple of issues that I am trying to sort out. The friend that I got the car from mentioned that it had, on occasion, "stalled" at a red light or stop sign, but would easily restart. Also, when I test drove the car, when releasing the gas pedal (on a down hill) the car suddenly began to down shift rapidly through the gears, all the way to 1st. after returning to the house, I went out for a second test drive and it never hesitated once, DROVE PERFECT!. I then returned home and went for a third drive. On this drive it rapidly downshifted, again on a down hill. all three test were done within one hour. I took it for a test drive yesterday and it had a new issue. after pilling out of the driveway, and attempting to go up the hill, I had the pedal to the floor and I didn't seem to get full throttle (or the trans didn't downshift). it did this a couple of times on this test drive.
I have been doing some online research and found several articles, so I have been making a list of "possible causes/solutions".
1) Clear the adaptations and relearn the transmission
2) Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor
3) Down shift solenoid
4) Oil Extreme Additive
I don't know if I'm right or not, but I am leaning toward the first 2. I checked codes and the only ones showing are O2 sensor codes.
any suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Glen...How many miles are on the car. MINI says that the trans fluid is 'lifetime' and I think they defined' lifetime' as the life of the warranty. I have a 2005 R52 s and I plan to change the trans fluid when it reaches 50,000miles. I would put changing the trans oil between 1 and 2.
