Yellow Check Engine Light

I am new to NAM, and also a relatively new owner of a 2008 Clubman S. 91,000 miles. The car overall runs great. Definitely burns oil, however. Of late I am dealing with a problem where the Dummy Check Engine Light kicks on. Each time I take it to AutoZone, the OBD reader sees not error code. The problem started out as intermittent, but it eventually stayed on constantly. I changed out the crankcase ventilation hose as it seemed to be old and cracking. Once I made that part replacement, the computer actually threw a hard code where the yellow check engine light showed up in the center display. At this point, I figured outside of my expertise, so I took it to a mechanic that works for my Friend's used car dealership. He showed the error code as requiring replacement of the fuel tank breather valve. He kept the car and drove it for two days with no issues or error lights on either panel. Upon picking the car up, I drove it for 20 miles and upon a hard acceleration on the freeway, the Dummy Check Engine Light came back on. Back to AutoZone, once again their OBD reader showed no code. Note: The car runs and idles just fine and has plenty of power. Can someone tell me what might be going on here?

Thanks!

It’s a BMW specific code throwing you into “limp” mode. With that mileage and symptoms I’m gonna guess a worn wastegate, (ie turbo replacement).

Thanks for the feedback. Interesting. I did a replacement of the turbo oil supply line (upgraded it) and all of the seals on the turbo oil cooler back in January. The car runs great other than this stinking light.

I have a similar issue with my wife's 2013 JCW Countryman. It randomly throws a yellow check engine light every now and then and in no specific situation (rain, dry, hard driving, normal driving, etc.) with absolutely no change in performance, idling, etc. I've checked it with a basic OBDII bluetooth code reader and a more specialized Amazon-bought BMW code reader but I can't seem to find the issue.

Also weird, yellow check engine light only seem to happens when we use my key fob. Never happens with her key fob. The car also seems to have a minor electrical gremlin regarding the navigation system joystick. The joystick works some days, other days it's not. I'm starting to wonder if I had a worn / partially rodent-chewed wire somewhere.

I suggest buying a Foxwell NT510 and pull the code(s). My first suspect would be vacuum lines swelling and coming loose or even off.

Check for a pending code (a Foxwell nt510 can do this) if autozone’s scan didn’t show a code.
