Timing over retard code. Why is it pulling timing?

im getting a timing over retard code on my 2009 cooper S. Idle is jumpy and irresponsive taking off.

The torque app shows the timing surging all the way down to -12 at idle. The timing will advance after throttle and all is good.

Will the vanos pull timing? I have one in the mail but unsure if I need a camshaft sensor also.

I just replaced the timing chain but im pretty positive all was installed correctly as I had all the correct special tools.

Vanos was cleaned as was the non return valve.

Also getting powertrsin and misfire codes codes but I figuired that's from the timing over retard

it doesn't hurt to pop the valve cover and recheck the timing...It happened to me once on an N14 and another on an N18.

The vanos is a valve to adjust the timing based on demand and performance settings and it can cause what you're having.

checked timing, it was off with the crank. Fixed everything and fired it up. Sounded smooth then started sounding rough after a minute. Killed clear old codes and started it back up.

Its still surging rapidly and retarding timing. I'm hoping it's the vanos solenoid.

On on another note it pulls better..... but I'm seeing 18psi.

I drove it around some more and it cleaned itself up. Runs great now. I'm holding 15psi.
