New owner - 2012 Mini R56 -- N16 Engine with issues
Good morning all!
I am the new owner of a 2012 Mini R56 / N16 74k with automatic transmission. This is my first mini so it looks like a blast.
I have been reading several threads and this community looks very knowledgeable and helpful so thanks for welcoming me.
I came into possession of this 2012 Mini since my neighbor was done dealing with the car. The engine began mis-firing and he threw lots of money into new coils etc. He ended up taking it to the dealer (report attached) and they stated he needed a new engine. It sat in his garage since October 2017.
Codes: P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0201, P0003, C0300, (and others my scan tool wont read)
As an aside the previous owner was not very good about maintenance...so that may have been a contributor.
I have a couple asks:
1) I am thinking I need to validate the dealer findings to ensure that it is a bad cylinder. I am assuming compression test / leak down test to accomplish this.
2) If this yields that the rings are bad am I better off trying to rebuild this block or purchase a used block? I have found an N16 motor for 2k locally with 25k on the clock.
3) If rebuild I am planning on purchasing the Bentley Mini book...but any threads on N16 rebuilds would be helpful.
I am also very capable shade tree mechanic. Pulled engines and swapped clutches but never a full rebuild.
Thanks in advance. I am sure we can get this beast running together!

welcome aboard...as you mentioned, you would want to do a compression test. but first take the valve cover off and take a look at the timing chain and guides. make sure internals are healthy and look in good shape before running tests. also, check the timing.
