2006 R50 base left side axle removal

2006 Mini Cooper base R50 5 speed manual

Having trouble getting the left side axle to let go of the tranny today. I pried in every way imaginable from under the car and at the wheel with no luck. The video's I looked up on you tube make it look pretty easy. I really can't pull on the axle or I will pull the outer axle from the inner.

Does anyone know of a trick I have not though up yet to get this axle off the tranny? Everything I found on the site just said to pry a little and it will pop off. I have been prying for the past 3 hours with no luck.

Is is possible to take the right side axle off and use a wooden dowel and punch out the left side axle? I remember reading something of the like somewhere but can't seem to find it again. Any help would be appreciated.

The driver side axle differs from the passenger side axle in that it has a snap-ring integrated into the end which engages an internal recess, thus holding it into place. Because of that system, the axle needs to be “popped” out of place with a quick motion of a longish pry bar.

The Mod MINI video (below) shows the exact technique at about 19:40 in...
