2004 R53 clutch throwout lever-no tension towards slave?

I have a quick question. I just replaced my leaky clutch slave cylinder and bled the system (by forcing brake fluid up the bleed valve with an oiling can). The pedal is stiff. When looking underneath after removing the clutch slave again, I noticed that the throwout lever arm does not provide any "spring loaded" tension. It just clicks back and forth. Never having done a mini, it seems unusual at best. How is the slave ever supposed to provide a pushing force if it is already fully extended? Does anyone know how it is supposed to feel? Do I have a bad fork or throwout bearing? Please help.
