Mini Caught Fire
Mini Caught Fire
Hello,
This is my first post here as I am looking for help. A couple weeks ago my 2005 mini caught fire. I had it towed to the dealer and they confirmed the power steering caused the fire. Myself and the dealer have contacted mini about this to see what steps need to be taken. However, I feel I am being given the run around.. Everything I have read online points to the issue they had with the power steering units and the suggested recall by the NHTSA. The dealer has quoted me around $4k to fix the problem and they have been very helpful. I believe this should be covered under the known issue. What about the extended power steering warranty that was issued? What can I do to get this resolved?
Thanks,
Wes

Did the fire start when the car was parked or when you were driving? Have you talked to your insurance carrier to see if your auto policy would cover? If so, the car would likely be totaled.....you can buy an 05 for less than $4k at this point.
My wife drove it home and the power steering went out a couple miles from the house. After about 30 minutes in the driveway a neighbor alerted us the car was on fire. I understand the value of the car, but we're not in a situation the but a replacement at the time. We only have liability on the car.
I believe there is a recall for this? If so go to the NHTSA website put in your VIN# and check. If the recall does apply then MINI has no choice but to fix it as there is no mileage limitation on a recall.
"The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began investigating the cars in 2010 after getting 339 complaints including five minor crashes and three fires involving melted wires."
