Passenger air bag light near rear view mirror

Just wondering if the light should be light ALL the time if no passenger is in the seat.

We have other cars ( not mini) and the light stays on indicating OFF

This is the light that is near the rear view mirror.

It goes on when starting the car and goes off after a few seconds.

I had the sensor mat on the seat replaced at Mini dealership last year

2006 R 50

Appreciate any and all help

Thank you

That's normal. The light only stays on above a minimum weight on the seat, around 3-5 lbs.

Yup, very normal. If you want to turn the light off, put a 25lb bag of rice on your passenger seat

x3. Mine goes on when I have my backpack and purse in the passenger seat (but not just the purse). It stays off when my son is in the seat, or the seat is empty.

25 lbs isn't enough — the threshold is around 60 lbs. It is to prevent injury to children from airbag deployment (there had been some actual deaths). BMW/MINI doesn't turn on the passenger warning light if the weight is below about 5-10 lbs (but the airbag still won't deploy). Some other manufacturers don't have this lower threshold and the warning is on whenever there is no passenger.
