2003 S timing chain slack
2003 S timing chain slack
Picked up a seriously neglected 2003 Cooper S with 113,000 miles on it. Ive spent the last month servicing and repairing the car to ensure reliability and know where I stand with the car. Part of that was a new timing set because I was hearing some noise in that area upon start up and while driving. After replacing the timing set with all new components the noise is still there and worse. I get a ticking/rattle on start up that goes away when the oil light turns off, and everything seems normal until about 3000rpms and a loud ticking noise comes back. It all sounds like it’s coming from the timing chain area. Specifically around the cam sprocket. I pulled the front cover off to inspect and noticed what seems like a lot of slack in the chain. My question is for those guys that have replaced the timing chain in their cars...does this look normal? The chain has maybe 250 miles on it. Video in YouTube link...
Yes. I replaced the entire timing set including the tensioner. I forgot to mention that when I installed the set the tensioner felt slightly odd when compressing it. After I still had the noise I suspected a faulty tensioner so I replaced the tensioner again with no change.
I never found out if the slack in the chain was normal. Turns out the noises I was hearing was the number 3 and 4 rod bearings on the way out. Shortly after this post number 4 spun and started knocking. I wound up replacing the engine with a low mileage junk yard unit. Problem free for over a year now.
