Transmission issue

I have never had a car that was this difficult to get into reverse. Could it be the linkage? Or is it normal for a Mini Cooper S 2009?

I should have added that it is a six gear manual.

I have been driving manuals for decades and it took me some time to learn to put my mini in reverse .

In "neutral " it moves easily side to side. To move the stick to the left to put it in reverse was a pain at first. It felt stiff and I had a difficult time finding the notch. Now it just happens naturally.

No. Just difficult to move up into reverse. Side to side is fine. Up and down into all the other gears if fine.

check the coolant and air pipes sitting above the shifter under the hood.
