This time I took every reasonable precaution.

New turbo oil line that has it's own heat wrap sleeve.

Extra heat shield over top of turbo oil line.

Stock turbo heat shield in place of course.

DEI Cool tape on bottom front of valve cover.

It's a R56 S (N14) Manic Stage 3 with Alta 42MM turbo running map A.

77 degrees at start of track session at 5:20PM Palm Beach Int'l Raceway.

Only one full session done, inside of hood above valve cover is dripping oil. Most of valve cover is soaked. Oil is melted on turbo heat shield.

Previous time my valve cover melted was due to a leaky original oil line.

Any solutions? I can't seem to find a mass produced metal valve cover

 

Only things i can think to add that would benefit:

1.wrap the DP
2.put a blanket on the snail under the OEM heat sheild
3.manual fan switch install to run front cooling fan 24/7

 

Open up he hood scoop to allow a little more outside air into engine compartment.

 

This will greatly reduce your under hood temperatures.

Also remove the phony scoop grill, you don't have to replace it with a screen, you don't need anything to block the cooling air flow.

 

I would wrap it, I have seen some valve cover melt under really heavy loads, but you have to be pushing the car very hard and long. I would get a universal heat wrap for the snail. That aux cooling fan is a great idea.

 

Pop the hood after a run. This is going to be a huge help to dissipate heat from the engine bay after a run, I highly recommend popping the hood and letting the car idle down for about 10 minutes.

I have seen some of the cheap turbo heat shields actually cause more problems with melting the valve covers than they actually help, which shield are you running?

 

I actually just had 3 caution laps on first session. 2nd session was all I really ran hard at which I did pop the hood right after.

I just have the regular stock shield. Hood scoop blanket is removed but the grille is still there. Perhaps I should have taken it out. I have a 2nd grille that I plan on drilling the openings out and switching to.

This was only a 20 minute session. OEM Valve cover from FCP Euro. Temp outside was 77 degrees. Possibly unusual but as the session went on I saw the temp read 85 degrees even though outside was actually getting cooler.

 

I run Way's blanket, the original heat shield over the blanket, an NM turbo heat shield, a challenge style vent scoop, and a wire mesh scoop grille.....let it idle with hood open....I also have a GP2 belly pan...not sure if or how that affects my turbo cooling. I've also recently installed hood insulation from a Euro diesel 2nd Gen....not sure that it affects the turbo cooling though.

I had some heating issues before I installed the blanket. I like Way's blanket because it is a very good fit.

Yep, forgot about the gen 2 diesel mod that should protect the hood a little wider and save your hood stripes a little more and maybe a hand touching the hot hood after a track day. GP2 pulls down some heat from the DP just looking at the design and flow.
