Rear hatch supports/struts/shocks: how-to for replacement?

The supports that hold up the boot or rear hatch on my '06 are shot, and while replacement parts aren't expensive, I haven't been able to find any instructional posts, articles, or videos on how to complete the job.

Any tips or links to share?

TIA

It is not intuitive at all. For removal I use a wide flat blade screwdriver to slide out the sprint clips at the ball joints. I think you can just pull the strut out but I am a gentleman and don't like unnecessary force unless situation warrants.

For installing, you just pop the new struts onto the ball joints. Don't try to slide the spring clips.

Didn't you read Bentley? It is less useful than old newspaper for wiping the butt when it comes to things like this.

Recently replaced mine. Be sure to get a stick/rod/piece of wood to hold the hatch open when the struts are off. That sucker is heavy.

I used a flat blade screwdriver covered in tape to pry/pop them off the ball joints.

Just watch when doing them and prop it for safety, if you do one side, then the other side is completey gone the trunk my slam down on your head.

Hood prop like this helps until the other side is done.

I've let the boot lid rest on my head while I replace them, do it one side at a time.

Release the clip that retains the strut to the ball socket, pull the strut off the socket at either end, clip new ones on.

Exactly what Nick said. It's one of the easiest repairs out there.

Thanks to all for the replies. That was a GEICO repair job: so easy a caveman could do it

It probably took more time to wash the grease & gunk off my hands than it did to actually replace both struts.
