Thanks for replying guys.

Okay, I've taken a couple more videos. I did a cold start:
and some revs after the engine RPM dropped:

Are these sounds normal?

Yes the sound appears when it's cold, under load at 2-3k rpm, but then disappears.

The piston tensioner requires oil pressure to operate correctly. When these fail, the loose ability to extend properly to put tension on the chain( think of a loose bike chain as a kid). As the oil warms up and flows, the chain is not sloppy. We’re only talking a few MM of adjustment. They can measure the chain slack with it still installed. Only takes a few min with the factory tool.
Tell the dealer you want them to measure slack, update you to the newest tensioner and document everything properly for future repairs.

Thanks for the explanation. I tested this morning and found that it made the sound even in neutral before disappearing again. How urgently should I get the tensioner replaced?

I know this is an old thread but I have been chasing this issue on my car, too. I cannot find a solution nor figure out why it’s happening.

Were you ever able to solve this problem?

No I have not! I am taking it in for a recall and will have them check the chain then and will update. It has not gotten any worse.

Okay! Thank you for responding. Mine hasn’t gotten worse, either. I’m just hoping to isolate the source.

A long screwdriver, pushed against various engine parts and held against an ear can help locate the source of the noise (at least roughly).

Yeah that trick is fun. I’ve got a automotive stethoscope for jobs like that.

I’ll try that out next chance I get!

I just replaced my tensioner today. My early 2013 build did not have the most up to date tensioner. The one in the car was a good 10mm shorter than the new one.

It doesn’t seem to be making the noise anymore with the new tensioner. Definitely glad I did that job!
