I had the same problem for a couple of months where it had intermittently engine die off during drive. After wait for a couple of mins 5-20 mins it will starts and works for a few weeks to months.

My symptoms:
1. there isn't any error code
2. No indicator or warming light

The problem is with the JBE where one of the relay (K96) not working and cause the low pressure fuel pump not working. When the low pressure fuel pump not supplying the High Pressure fuel pump the engine will stop right away even when you are cruising.
Unfortunately the relay (K96) not replaceable item as it is part of the JBE board. therefore i have no choice but to get used or new part. I managed to get a new JBE and installed then get it coded with NCS and winKFP.

It's all working nicely now.


My advise when you have intermittent engine stalled please check :
1. power supply to low pressure fuel pump
2. change you fuel filter
3. check HPFP pressure

Yes, that is absolutely correct part. I have ordered the same part no too.

But make sure you have ECS Tuning check with your VIN.

Thanks for the response edwkmho. My 2008 with new fuel pump, engine etc etc etc and an a HPFP with 50k miles on it suddenly shut off for the first time in parking lot at low speeds. Would not start until second try. I have so many new parts in this car I suspect this relay could be bad after 11 years and 155,000 miles.

In true Mini fashion, they make this 20 times as expensive as it needs to be, as is the case for the EGR valve built into the valve cover.

A fuel pump relay for any other car is $20, except Mini, where its $500.

Totally agreed that BMW/Mini had made their vehicle much more expensive to maintain.

Just imagine in yours and my case of the JBE replacement due to just a single relay failure. I still keep my old JBE hoping to find the faulty relay someday.

What i used was INPA + winkfp with USB K+DCAN cable to code the new JBE.

INPA and winKFP are BMW specific tools for coding.

 

Expensive?

I dont think my Autoenginuity with BMW extension can code a new part. For example it couldnt progam a new steering wheel clock/spring unit. It has some actuation functions but its not 100% comprehensive.

Just need to get the USB K+DCAN cable from BimmerGeeks or ebay.
