my Cooper-S clutch may be failing

The gears are disengaged when I barely touch the pedal and the engine races like it's in neutral if I accelerate hard, like when passing. I'm the original owner of this 2007 model and have only 45,000 miles on it. I've been afraid to use it since early June, but now need to get it in service again. Any suggestions would help. I live in Colorado Springs and bought the car via military sales in England. The nearest dealer is 70 miles away, in Denver.
