Strange driveline behavior

I am getting what sounds like a lot of road noise. I suspected a wheel bearing or transmission so I lifted the front end, put it in gear and gave it a little gas to hear where it was coming from. What happened surprised me.. The engine shuddered and the car shook after the clutch was engaged.. at about 1800 rps, it would shake, shudder and make a brief grinding noise (like a trashed CV joint).

I got out to look at it and one wheel is stopping, then they both turn, then the other wheel stops and it makes a noise and the engine shudders as it transitions. It alternates about every 5-10 seconds.

1) shouldn't they turn together?
2) could this be a symptom of my "road noise"?

2003 mini base model
145k miles

Any help is appreciated as I keep having problems with my cars after I take them to the local mechanics.

Thanks,

MJ

Seems like your ASC/DSC (traction control) is kicking in. Try turning this off and then proceeding with your test.

Ahhh!! Thank you!!

Also, The right side wheel bearing was worn out. I replaced the hub and my road noise is gone! : ))
