Turbo flutter = failed BOV/Diverter?

I have a 2017 Clubman S ALL4. About 5 weeks old, with just shy of 4k miles on the clock. Yup, enjoying it. :-D

Anyway, I hadn't noticed this at first- but after a few thousand miles, I have a LOT of turbo flutter when I let off the throttle. Sport mode, mid mode- both chirp incessantly when I let off under heavy acceleration. My dealership claims this doesn't sound normal and want to have a look. Two others claim it is normal. I was under the assumption that one main goal of the diverter valve is to eliminate turbo flutter. Has my valve failed?

Sorry for the double post, but come on - no one here knows what their turbo sounds like?

:-/

Finally drove mine with the windows open and some decent throttle application this weekend...hey, it really does have a turbo (ha,ha)! I noticed only a slight amount of flutter, but it was there. So funny how quiet this car is compared to my Mustang, but nowhere near as much flutter as on the 2.3L. I know you could certainly hear the compressor whistle vary quite a bit as the wastegate regulates the boost pressure, yet I didn't step off the accelerator when in the upper RPM range, I had enough time to back off the throttle at a slower pace.

The higher up the boost level, the more flutter you will hear when just dumping off the throttle as there is the most amount of pressure in the least amount of time to blow off. Even with a blow-off valve and external wastegate setups on setups I have worked on, you still get flutter, just not as much as without.

Also don't forget, one man's madness is another's tranquility (i.e.- differing threshold levels).

Thanks for the reply. It's a little comforting to hear others report turbo flutter- but I'm still wondering if mine is excessive. Under heavy boost, I hear 4-8 chirps. How much boost is typical for a stock Clubman S? I'm getting a little over 8 psi read from Torque on my smartphone. I had expected closer to 10 or 11?

Maybe I'm just getting used to it (and need that Dinan module now :-) but it feels like it doesn't pull as much as it did a couple of weeks ago before I started hearing the chirping.

Kind of tough to count the flutters, but I would have to guess I hear somewhere in the neighborhood of 4-8 as you noted. Guessing the amount of flutters will vary depending on several parameters that are hard to duplicate between vehicles/drivers.

I would love to get a mechanical boost guage on mine, not one of the electronic read versions. Always fun to watch the boost gauge dance as you go up through the gears.

My guess is you are getting more accustomed to the acceleration and not much else. Only way to definitively tell would be to get your car on a dyno and see what you are putting to the wheels.
